Erik Gunnar Asplund (22 September 1885 – 20 October 1940) was a Swedish architect, mostly known as a key representative of Nordic Classicism of the 1920s, and during the last decade of his life as a major proponent of the modernist style which made its breakthrough in Sweden at the Stockholm International Exhibition (1930).

The library was the climax and finale to a neo-classical architectural era, and is based on the geometric shape of a cube encompassing a cylinder. Asplund was also chief architect for the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, making him one of those who introduced functionalist architecture to Sweden. The exhibition also attracted international attention. Gunnar Asplund died on 20 October 1940, at the age of only 55.

Stockholm City Library is internationally regarded as one of the finest examples of Scandinavian 1920s Swedish Grace architecture. Gunnar Asplund's masterpiece is one of the few Swedish construction works of the time mentioned in international contexts.
