The term ‘chemometrics’ was coined by Svante Wold in a grant application 1971, and the International Chemometrics Society was formed shortly thereafter by Svante Wold and Bruce Kowalski, two pioneers in the field.

He has been Professor of Chemometrics for Umeå University since 1986. Dr. Wold is a Member of the Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. He received a PhD in Chemistry from Umeå University. As indicated in table 2, the term "chemometrics" was conceived by Svante Wold, in January 1971. The reader's attention is called to the interesting paragraph by Wold, in reference [7], which details the beginnings of chemometrics, including the start of the Chemometrics Society by Wold and Kowal- 1987-08-01 An alternative term for PLS (and more correct according to Svante Wold) is projection to latent structures, but the term partial least squares is still dominant in many areas. Although the original applications were in the social sciences, PLS regression is today most widely used in chemometrics and related areas.

Twenty years after the term chemometrics was freshly “minted,” by Bruce Kowalski and Svante Wold, the chemometrics community still seems to be searching for a universal definition and a clear identity.
